The Trump administration is freezing nearly $1.1 billion in Medicaid payments to Minnesota and California, over concerns that they need to prove claims are legitimate. The goal behind this, federal officials say, is to hold states accountable by making sure taxpayer dollars are spent properly. However, state leaders fear even temporary funding interruptions will negatively impact the healthcare systems serving millions.
Medicaid provides health benefits to more than 80 million Americans, including children, older adults, the disabled, those in low-income families, and pregnant women. It also serves as a lifeline for hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, and home care agencies.
No patients are expected to lose Medicaid coverage. However, there could be financial impacts from delayed federal reimbursements. Many providers count on these reimbursements to help them keep services running.
Policymakers rarely discuss what the human impact of these decisions will be Not being paid enough isn’t just about budgets, it is about people. Hospitals and service providers in rural areas are especially at risk.
I know what it is like to lose Medicaid services. This spring, MassHealth abruptly took away my night PCA hours. Having someone available to help me at night is not a luxury. It is something I need to be safe, healthy, and live on my own in my home.
The appeal process was exhausting. I had to collect documentation, fill out forms, and call several times to make sure that the care I needed was given back to me. People should not have to spend months fighting for the care they need.
My experience was related to a state Medicaid appeal. However, I know that I am not the only one who has been affected by Medicaid cuts. Behind each number, reimbursement rate and case file is a human being who depends on Medicaid to survive.
Fraud prevention matters, but protecting the integrity of Medicaid shouldn’t mean leaving the people who rely on it without support. Governments can uphold fiscal responsibility and still deliver essential services, and they should do so without putting Medicaid beneficiaries in situations that are unfair.
Medicaid funding is not just a political issue. It is a matter of life or death for many people who would otherwise not have access to care.
