Apple’s Improved Accessibility Features

Apple is introducing an array of new features geared at helping people with various disabilities. This month, the company said that it will include “accessibility nutrition labels” on the product pages of apps and games in the App Store. Before customers download an app, the labels will inform them whether an item is compatible with accessibility choices such as voice control, larger text, appropriate contrast, reduced motion, captions, and more. The features are expected to be available later this year.

“Consumers deserve to know if a product or service will be accessible to them from the very start,” said Eric Bridges, president and CEO at the American Foundation for the Blind. “These labels will give people with disabilities a new way to easily make more informed decisions and make purchases with a new level of confidence.”

In addition to the labels, Apple announced it is improving Braille capabilities on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. They will also provide users with new text customization options to make reading easier for people with dyslexia, low vision, and other disabilities. Among other enhancements, Apple Watch will now support live captioning.

“At Apple, accessibility is part of our DNA,” said Tim Cook, the company’s CEO. “Making technology for everyone is a priority for all of us, and we’re proud of the innovations we’re sharing this year. That includes tools to help people access crucial information, explore the world around them, and do what they love.”

As someone who has cerebral palsy, Apple products play a major role in my daily life. I use my iPad and iPhone every day to check emails, read, pay bills, shop, schedule appointments, and stay in touch with family and friends.

I also use the Home app to control my Amazon Fire TV. After I bought a new TV last year, I learned that you can use the Home app to control a smart TV. I can use the app to turn the TV on and off, change the channel, and adjust the volume.

Apple’s accessibility features allow me to access more of my technology. I am grateful that technology is advancing every day. Accessibility features allow disabled people to live more independent lives.
