A university in the United Kingdom underestimated the expense of a sign language interpreter. Due to this error, a deaf student at The University of Brighton was forced to drop out. Chelsea Reinschmidt, an international student from the United States pursuing a master’s degree in occupational therapy, left the university after learning last week that the university could not provide a sign language interpreter.
Chelsea had already spent almost £10,000 on airfare, visas, and housing. They filed an official complaint with the university. “It’s devastating. I’m trying to remain strong and positive and just try to fight it as best I can” said Reinschmidt. According to the 2010 Equality Act, all universities are required by law to make their courses accessible.
Chelsea received funding for sign language interpretation for lectures and seminars through a US student loan, based on Brighton University’s estimates of the number of hours required. However, when Chelsea had already moved and settled into the UK, the university realized it had overestimated the total number since it neglected to account for the fact that two interpreters were required, as well as placements on the course.
Chelsea’s student loan servicer then declined to increase the loan amount. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea was devastated when told that they couldn’t continue or they would have to switch subjects.
Chelsea was also informed by the university that any peer fundraising to cover the cost of the sign language interpreters required to allow them to finish the course would not be supported. Due to their visa agreements, Brighton University kept Chelsea enrolled in the program and did offer a course transfer, but they have since officially dropped out of school.
Disabled people deserve a college degree. Disabled people need to have institutional barriers to higher education removed. We can accomplish so much if we are given the support we need.
