CW: Surgery
Thirteen years ago today, I underwent surgery on my hamstrings. I was only 12 years old. The recovery was one of the hardest things I have ever faced.
The muscle spasms post-op were intense and painful. I also dealt with severe vomiting and nausea that brought me to tears more times than I can count. I also had an adverse reaction to Valium that caused a drastic change in my mood. It was overwhelming, but I am so thankful that my family was there for me throughout the entire process.
One of the only bright spots during my recovery was when my aunt and cousins came to the hospital to visit. Their presence brought comfort and joy when I needed it most. I also enjoyed watching movies.
For those who don’t know, a hamstring lengthening is a surgery often performed on people with cerebral palsy to help loosen the hamstrings, which are located at the back of the thigh. Due to spasticity, the hamstrings can become very tight and make walking, standing, or sitting difficult. During the surgery, a surgeon lengthens these muscles by carefully releasing part of the tendons to improve movement and reduce pain.
The surgery typically takes about 20 minutes per leg. It is performed under general anesthesia. My surgery was performed at Children’s Hospital Boston by Dr. Travis Matheney.
I have a history of vomiting after going under anesthesia which always makes me nervous. After leaving the recovery room, I was offered an ice pop. Unfortunately, I vomited shortly afterward which made recovery even more difficult.
Looking back now, that surgery marked a turning point in my life. Living with cerebral palsy is never easy, and this surgery was a step toward improving my mobility. But the recovery was far from easy. I became very depressed after the surgery. Still, I learned the meaning of resilience and patience through that time.
13 years later, I am grateful for the medical care I received. I am also thankful for my family and friends and the strength I found within myself. It was not a magic fix, but a step forward.
This anniversary reminds me that growth and recovery are not straightforward. The process is messy, painful, and full of setbacks. However, it is also filled with progress, hope, and moments of triumph.

You are incredibly brave in all you do, and were brave beyond what one might expect from a 12 yo!
